How to Develop a Research Paper Timeline

Research papers come in many sizes and levels of complexity. There is no single set of rules that fits every project, but there are guidelines you should follow to keep yourself on track throughout the weeks as you prepare, research, and write. You will complete your project in stages, so you must plan ahead and give yourself enough time to complete every stage of your work. Your first step is to write down the due date for your paper on a big wall calendar, in your planner, and in an electronic calendar. Plan backward from that due date to determine when you should have your library work completed. A good rule of thumb is to spend: Fifty percent of your time researching and readingTen percent of your time sorting and marking your researchForty percent of your time writing and formatting Timeline for Researching and Reading Stage 1 week for short papers with one or two sources2-3 weeks for papers up to ten pages2-3 months for a thesis It’s important to get started right away on the first stage. In a perfect world, we would find all of the sources we need to write our paper in our nearby library. In the real world, however, we conduct internet queries and discover a few perfect books and articles that are absolutely essential to our topic—only to find that they are not available at the local library. The good news is that you can still get the resources through an interlibrary loan. But that will take time. This is one good reason to do a thorough search early on with the help of a reference librarian. Give yourself time to collect many possible resources for your project. You will soon find that some of the books and articles you choose don’t actually offer any useful information for your particular topic. You’ll need to make a few trips to the library. You won’t finish in one trip. You’ll also discover that you will find additional potential sources in the bibliographies of your first selections. Sometimes the most time-consuming task is eliminating potential sources. Timeline for Sorting and Marking Your Research 1 day for a short paper3-5 days for papers up to ten pages2-3 weeks for a thesis You should read each of your sources at least twice. Read your sources the first time to soak in some information and to make notes on research cards. Read your sources a second time more quickly, skimming through the chapters and putting sticky note flags on pages that contain important points or pages that contain passages that you want to cite. Write keywords on the sticky note flags. Timeline for Writing and Formatting Four days for a short paper with one or two sources1-2 weeks for papers up to ten pages1-3 months for a thesis You don’t really expect to write a good paper on your first attempt, do you? You can expect to pre-write, write, and rewrite several drafts of your paper. You’ll also have to rewrite your thesis statement a few times, as your paper takes shape. Don’t get held up writing any section of your paper—especially the introductory paragraph. It is perfectly normal for writers to go back and complete the introduction once the rest of the paper is completed. The first few drafts don’t have to have perfect citations. Once you begin to sharpen your work and you’re heading toward a final draft, you should tighten your citations. Use a sample essay if you need to, just to get the formatting down. Make sure your bibliography contains every source you’ve used in your research.

Ethics in business has to do with making the right choices - often there is no apparent one right way and one must choose the best in the circumstances. Managers are sometimes faced with business choices that create tensions between ethics and profits, or between their private gain and the public good. Any decision where moral considerations are relevant can potentially give rise to an ethical dilemma, for example: †¢ A decision that requires a choice between rules †¢ A decision where there is no rule, precedent or example to follow †¢ A decision that morally requires two or more courses of action, which are in practice incompatible with each other. †¢ A decision that should be taken in one’s self-interest, but which appears to violate a moral principle that you support. It is the imperative to act, combined with the uncertainty of which action to take, that causes a dilemma. My thinking was influenced by Goldratt’s (1994) Evaporating Cloud technique, which is used for the logical representation of conflict. The Business Ethics Synergy Star (BESS) (Robinson, 2002) is designed specifically for the logical representation of any business issue that contains an ethical dimension. Its constructs provide the user with a consistent way of expressing moral dilemmas. A 56 years old female employee at SSM IHT starts her work daily at 6am and ends day at 5pm, she works 10 hours a day for four days in a week and takes a day off either Friday or Monday, that way she wants to spend quality time with her family and also help her handicapped aunt. Her situation is a perfect example for a flextime and compressed workweek. However this flexibility has disadvantages, it adds extra load on other employees when she is not at work. Telecommuting is an essential way of doing the work from any remote location using computers which are connected through internet to their office, it is called as Work From Home(WFH) here at SSM IHT. Most of the Information technology service providers now provide telecommuting. At SSM IHT employees are provided with option of working from home more than a day , on some special cases they have provided WFH all five days a week for some employees. Telecommuting provides more flexibility and encourages employees to have work-life balance. Mainly during disasters and bad weathers SSM encourages employees to stay home and work, that way safety of the employees are addressed effectively by the organization and at the same time daily services are not interrupted. Also telecommuting addresses the challenge of ever growing work force and office space, this also saves the employees travel expences and promotes greener planet. Part-Time work employees work for less hours than full time work employees, usually students and parents with children prefer to work part time. Employees utilize this flexibility when they want to spend time in managing their personal business or managing their children. A manager of SAP Finance and BW ,who is parent of three children, opted to go from fulltime to part-time and only works from Tuesday to Thursday, she wanted to spend more time with children in educating them. This flexibility made her to stay back at this organization. In Summary, Non monetary benefits like workplace flexibility provide satisfaction and motivate employees at SSM IHT to perform well which increases the productivity. Due to these flexibilities employee retention is very high at SSM IHT where many employees are working for more than 20 years. Gerald Croft Essay After discussion with those involved in the production of An Inspector Calls, I have decided to offer you the leading female role, that of Sheila Birling. The role is very challenging one and I would like to give you some idea of the play and Sheila Birlings part in it.  The play is set in 1912 and explores the theme of social responsibilities. The Birlings are a prosperous middle classed family and when the curtains open they are at dinner where Sheilas engagement to Gerald Croft is to be announced. Gerald comes from an even wealthier and socially superior family then the Birlings. The present and optimistic mood is disturbed by the arrival of an Inspector Goole who is investigating the suicide of a young woman Eva Smith. Arthur Birling is the head of his manufacturing factory, Birling Co. Eva Smith was working at his factory before she was fired from her factory-floor job. Before making his speech, Birling and the rest of his family were celebrating Sheilas engagement to Gerald Croft. Through his speech, Birlings point about responsibility is that a man should look after himself and his family. As an audience, we get the impression that Birlings opinion is not too well informed from the speech he had previously made. In that speech, he claims that, the now known Great War would never happen that it was just the Kaiser talking nonsense and the Titanic was unsinkable. The audiences feelings towards Birling are that he does not know what hes talking about; a 1945 audience would already know that the Titanic did sink and not only did the Great War happen but there was another war after that, therefore not taking his speech seriously. The Inspector is an interpretation of Priestley and the Socialist views he held. He was sent to the Birling household to interrogate the family about their involvement with Eva Smith. When the Inspector makes his speech, the Birling family secrets are all out in the open and there is a clear rift between the older and younger generation. The point about responsibility that is made in the Inspectors speech was that we are a community so therefore, we are responsible for each other. We know the Inspector is well informed due to the tone of voice he spoke in and how he knew what happened before any of the Birlings had confessed yet. Birling gets interrupted at the end of the speech by the Inspector, therefore leaving no time for the characters to respond, and there is no evidence that they felt the same as Birling. This makes us think that if a member of his family does not agree with his views then neither does Priestley. During the Inspectors speech, the characters present in the room respond with utter silence and awe. The silence and awe transcends to the audience as respect, which gives off the idea that we should agree with the Inspector. Arthur Birling uses personal pronouns like I and he. Using these kinds of pronouns portrays Birling as selfish. His argument seems limited as Birling is only making one point of view. The Inspector also uses personal pronouns but to refer to a group of people. By using these pronouns, the impression you receive is that he is talking about society. Also, it creates a direct response to the audience. The Inspectors use of these personal pronouns links to Priestleys message of that we dont live alone, we live in a community. Arthur Birling ridicules others during his speech. He criticises Socialists like the Inspector and Priestley. This language technique puts Birling in a weak position; it seems that all he can do is argue. The audience would take an instant dislike to Birling as he would be seen as a self-centered argumentative figure. A 1945 audience would also take a dislike to Birling, as due to the World Wars many of the younger generation died at the hands of the older generation. It is ironic because the audience get the feeling Birling is to be contradicted by someone who is viewed by the audience as his inferior. Being interrupted by the Inspector gives the Inspector the higher edge. It gives the impression that the Inspector is about to contradict Birling. The Inspector is not interrupted, giving him the power and respect from the characters and from the audience. Priestley uses interruptions to make the Inspector seem a greater force than Birling, as a result more respect is pres ented to the Inspector.
