English 1302 Poetry Analysis Essay Example

English 1302 Poetry Analysis Paper Page 957, Countee Cullen, Yet Do I Marvel 1. What is the significance and effect of the allusions to classical literature/myth in general? To these myths in particular? How do they individually and collectively help characterize the speaker’s situation? Through the use of metaphor and allusion, Cullen allows the readers to put themselves in his shoes. Through his poetry, the reader is presented with the struggle and the underlying true message- the harshness and cruelty towards the African Americans- the reality of racism. 2. Does the speaker’s attitude toward God or our sense of that attitude shift or change over the course of the poem? If so, how so? Where does he (and/or do we) end up? The first twelve lines of the sonnet portray the paradoxical nature of a good and kind God. Cullen remarks that if God were really good and kind then why did he create the mole as a blind animal? Why should we all die? Why do our best efforts often end in frustration and failure and unhappiness? Cullen answers these rhetorical questions by stating that Gods ways are mysterious and can never be fully understood by ordinary human beings. Page 959, Langston Hughes, â€Å"Harlem† 1. According to this poem, is there an answer to the question asked in the first line: â€Å"What happens to a dream deferred? † Yes, there is an answer; the question, â€Å"What happens to a dream deferred? † appears to be answered with nothing but more questions. But if we analyze each question we get an idea of what the speaker really believes about dreams being postponed. The â€Å"dream† is a goal in life, not just dreams experienced during sleep. The dream is important to the dreamer’s life. Nevertheless, the speaker’s position is clear that any important dream or goal that must be delayed can have serious negative affects. 2. This poem was written in 1951, approximately twenty years after the end of the Harlem Renaissance. It is the only poem in this chapter on the Harlem Renaissance that was written years after its end. How is the content of the poem possibly related to Harlem and the Harlem Renaissance within a post-Renaissance perspective? In 1951, frustration characterized the mood of American blacks. The Civil War in the previous century had liberated them from slavery, and federal laws had granted them the right to vote, the right to own property, and so on. However, continuing prejudice against blacks, as well as laws passed since the Civil War, relegated them to second-class citizenship. Consequently, blacks had to attend poorly equipped segregated schools and settle for menial jobs as porters, ditch-diggers, servants, shoeshine boys, and so on. In many states, blacks could not use the same public facilities as whites, including restrooms, restaurants, theaters, and parks. Access to other facilities, such as buses, required them to take a back seat, literally, to whites. By the mid-Twentieth Century, their frustration with inferior status became a powder keg, and the fuse was burning. Hughes well understood what the future held, as he indicates in the last line of the poem. Pages 959-960, Langston Hughes, The Weary Blues 1. Who is the narrator of this poem? Is the narrator different from the piano player in the poem? Is there a difference in the style of the poem as it shifts between the voice of the narrator and the voice of the singer? The singer and song become united in the same way that the speaker of the poem becomes not only a first-person narrator, but a third-person omniscient storyteller. The central narrative voice describes an African American in Harlem, who is observed singing and playing the  blues. 2. Are there any clues in the poem about the life of the singer? Why might the singer have the blues? Yes, there are clues, such as, Down on Lenox Avenue: Lenox Avenue is a main street in  Harlem, which in terms of the geography of New York, is North, or uptown. We might wonder why Hughes has written down on Lenox Avenue rather than up on Lenox Avenue. Lets think, then, about the identity of the speaker of the poem. Because Harlem was home mainly to African Americans and the parts of New York City south of Harlem (referred to as downtown) were populated mainly by whites, if the speaker were to perceive Lenox Avenue as up from his place of origin, we might assume that he is white. All the singer seems to have is his moaning blues, the revelation of a black mans soul, and those blues are what helps keep him alive. Part of that ability to sustain is apparently the way the blues help him keep his identity. Even in  singing the blue, he is singing about his life, about the way that he and other blacks have to deal with white society. As his black hands touch the white keys, the accepted Western sound of the piano and the form of Western music are changed. The piano itself comes to life as an extension of the singer, and moans, transformed by the black tradition to a mirror of black sorrow that also reflects the transforming power and beauty of the black tradition. . What do you make of the last line of the poem? Why does Hughes choose the word â€Å"dead† here? The poem works out Hughess apprehension, his feeling that his ability to understand the emotions that generated this form of artistic expression was not on a par with the expression itself This is indicated by the last line of the poem, where the speaker notes that the piano player slept like a rock or a man thats dead.   The po ems last line, then, ignores the blues performers ability to articulate pain and likewise to subsume it. That the speaker and the piano player never meet, or as Tracy asserts, strike up a conversation, share a drink, or anything else, suggests that the experience does not rupture the speakers externality. He never enters that space whereby the piano player is speaking for him, giving utterance to his loneliness. Finally, at no point in time does the speaker in the poem insert himself into the lyrics. In this respect, the last line calls our attention to the slippage that occurs when an understanding of the blues is lacking. That the speaker utters the possibility that the piano player has killed himself illustrates his failure to realize that the blues is performed reflection and not a preface to suicidal behavior. Pages 963-964, Claude McKay, â€Å"The Harlem Dancer† 1. This poem is an English (or Shakespearean) Sonnet with three quatrains and an ending couplet. What â€Å"celebration† seems to be made in the three quatrains? How is this â€Å"celebration† deflated in the ending couplet? In the first quatrain, McKay begins by expressing his disdain for America; however, he also expresses his dependence on the country as well. When he states â€Å"Although she feeds me bread of bitterness†, the speaker is telling the reader that he or she depends on America for his or her bread as a child depends on its mother. This leads the reader to believe that the speaker in McKay’s poem recognizes the fact that America is the source of his or her provision, although the food that is being provided is that of bitterness. This particular statement also might lend itself to the underlying feeling that many black Americans were experiencing at this time regarding their limited rights in the South. The country was responsible for seeing that blacks were given equal rights, but these rights were restricted unless the man could reach very unreal expectations. This led to bitterness among the Southern blacks. The second quatrain takes on a more positive focus, seemingly leading the reader to see some of the reasons that the speaker does, in fact, have positive feelings for America. â€Å"Her vigor flows like tides into my blood, / Giving me strength erect against her hate†. These lines indicate that the strength of the burgeoning country was the energy that fueled the speaker’s life. The most interesting interaction within this piece of text is the insurgence that the speaker brings out within the conflicting nature of the prose. While the speaker is boldly proclaiming that America is the source of his or her strength, he or she is rebelling against the provider of that strength and using it to stand up against the racial hate that was prevalent during this time period in America. Although the speaker is standing in strength against the bigotry and injustice within America, he or she seems to feel as if his or her personal stand might be insignificant within the larger picture of the struggle for equality. â€Å"Her bigness sweeps my being like a flood†. It is impossible for a single person to resist the mighty rushing waters of a flood as it rolls over the land. Perhaps, the speaker is expressing the futility of one person standing against the bigoted history of a nation alone. However, just because the speaker stands alone in futility, it does not preclude him from taking that stand. Pages 964- 966, James Weldon Johnson, â€Å"From the preface to The Book of American Negro Poetry† 1. According to Johnson, what are the contributions that can be made by Negro poets? I believe he wanted to let us know that Black or African literature has a rich history or tradition, which is largely due to the effects of the tragedies well documented in the recorded history of the African people, of dislocation, deprivation and degradation. In these circumstances it is hardly surprising that the propagation of Black culture including its literary achievements is a much recent phenomenon when compared to other races. Also the artistic style and dialect of the Negro is uniquely art in and of itself. 2. Do you think that Johnson’s statement â€Å"the richest contribution the Negro poet can make to the American literature of the future will be the fusion into it of his own individual artistic gifts† has been realized from 1921, the year the preface was written, to today? Why or why not? Explain your answer thoroughly. Yes, I believe the value of the Negro poet has been realized. The renaissance allowed for the flowering of a new consciousness, the emergence of great writers, masterful musicians, the celebration of one’s cultural roots, and the development of self-confidence and consciousness. It is without a doubt that the Harlem Renaissance was like an eternal spring of inspiration in the soul of African-Americans. That spring has provided nourishment and inner drive for sustainment into the eras beyond. That spring has fertilized the earth and has allowed the population of African-Americans to move into new and diverse dimensions regarding their self-worth, marvelous accomplishments, and diverse cultural successes. That spring of life in African-Americans which move them from slavery to freedom, is still watering the garden for future exponential growth economically, politically, philosophically, psychologically, and sociologically in directions beyond our human comprehension. Pages 975-977, Zora Neale Hurston, â€Å"How It Feels to Be Colored Me† 1. How does Hurston define and feel about her â€Å"color†? Explain your answer thoroughly. The majority of Hurston’s characters, though represented as black, could just as easily be of any race. Their lives, loves, humors, troubles and travails appear in Hurston’s writing as universal constants, soothing or afflicting without regard to either skin color or gender. Hurston approached the question of her apparent unconcern over racial issues more directly when she said, I have ceased to think in terms of race; I think only in terms of individuals. I am interested in you now not as a Negro man but as a man. In am not interested in the race problem, but I am interested in the problems of individuals, white ones and black ones. †

Role of social media in the success of the 2011 Egyptian revolution - Research Paper Example Egypt uprising, or as otherwise called 25th January transformation of 2011, following 11 days after Zine El Abidine, the Tunisian president was toppled when a huge number of Egyptians rated in the roads requesting the acquiescence of Hosni Mubarak. During the challenges in Cairo, one lobbyist depicted why social media was vital to the association of political turmoil. "We utilize Facebook to plan the dissents, Twitter to organize, and YouTube to tell the world, â€Å"On June 6, 2010, Khaled Said was pounded the life out of by police in a cybercafà © near Alexandria. His death advanced a remarkable solidarity in Egypt. After his death Wael Ghonim had established a Facebook page titled, "We Are All Khaled Said," It posted cell phone photographs from the funeral home of his beaten and bloodied face, and YouTube recordings played up differentiating pictures of him upbeat and grinning with the realistic pictures from the mortuary. The Facebook page of Khaled Saeed wound up noticeably fo cal in the dispersion of challenges all through Egypt, as a substantial number of individuals utilized it as a wellspring of data chosen to get out to the road in a quiet exhibit set on the twenty-fifth of January, 2011.On the other hand, Twitter was another segment of social media that was generally utilized during the transformation of 25th of January. Human Resource Management, Extrinsic and Intrinsic Award Essay

Human Resource Management, Extrinsic and Intrinsic Award - Essay Example These rewards are more relevant in low power-distance countries with good governmental support systems (Buelens et al., 2006, Pg. 232). Hence the need for extrinsic or intrinsic rewards should be gauged with reference to these social and cultural contexts. However in the era of globalization, making a choice between intrinsic or extrinsic becomes difficult. Balancing between these two extremes is a must for a modern day manager. As a manager, creating congenial environment that encourages intrinsic motivation will develop into intrinsic rewards at a later point. Framing rewards and recognition programs (extrinsic rewards) that complement an individual's intrinsic motivation will yield efficient results as well. E.g. recognizing the quick learning curve of an employee re-asserts the fact that intrinsic rewards such as learning will be rewarded if they are in line with company objectives. Overall balancing is an act of recognizing employee motivation rather than making choices on their behalf. What is the relationship between an employee's salary and his or her feeling of worth Explain your rationale from the viewpoints of an employee and a manager. How can managers create a balance between the two Total words: 250 Employee's salary can have a positive/negative feeli... 177-179). Hence a perception of fulfillment of these needs increases the feeling of worth and vice-a -versa. From an employee view-point salary should compensate for skill sets, previous experience, job responsibilities and be comparable with best in the industry. However a higher need for esteem fulfillment is also cognitively linked to salary in an employee's mind. From a manager's aspect salary is only flexible to the extent that it remains within the band prescribed by the organization for a particular level. Salary accounts to cost if the manager is responsible for a cost location. Hence in terms of worth, manager has fewer strings to influence the perception considering only the $ value of salary. Manager can create a balance by providing a salary structure that reflects the perception of worth in the employee's mind such as performance related pay, recognition for additional responsibilities handled etc. Apart from basic need fulfillment, employee perception can be influenced by fulfilling the need for esteem. Higher responsibilities, skill variety, task identity and significance (Buelens et al., 2006, Pg.193-194) - All these can be part of the overall job package apart from salary, which will influence the perception of worth positively. As a conclusion, compensation should be seen as a continuum of satisfying needs and flexed within boundaries to improve the perception of worth. What type of compensation component would you like to have through your employer that is not currently offered Explain your rationale. Explain both the benefits and negatives this component will bring to you as an employee and will bring to the company. Total words: 257 Performance based pay is the new component preferred.

Educational Needs Analysis Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Educational Needs Analysis - Research Paper Example The hospital is situated in the centre of the city and hence it has quite a lot of incoming traffic in its emergency ward as compared to other things. In total they offer health service in cancer; women related health issues, burn center, and diabetes center and as well as anesthesia and pain management center. It also has a huge blood bank and one of the biggest facilities that they offer is the walk in Huntington disease facility. This is one of the few hospitals to do so. Since the above mentioned facilities are the specialties of the hospital therefore they offer specialized training for the nurses. EDUACTIONAL NEED ANALYSIS Their hiring process is quite a comprehensive one. They hire nurses when they have done their basic education only. This is their only requirement; rest of the selection is dependent upon the assessment center alone. The Assessment center contributes a lot to the assessment of educational needs if they exist. In the assessment center they have a series of pro cess that an applicant has to go through there are in all five practical steps and the sixth and the final one is the written test. The written test comprises of five multiple choice questions and the second part of the written test is an essay. The essay has three parts in total, the first part is about what field the applicant wants to choose for specialization, the second part talks about why and what made them choose it and the final part of the essay talks about the applicants existent knowledge about the field. Once the applicant is selected, they are given the curriculum of the whole course and then they are to fill out a form in which they have to mention what they felt would be required and is not mentioned in the curriculum. This method is extremely helpful as the applicants are from all over states and as well as international students, they all come with their own background knowledge and insights and this helps expand the curriculum to be more broader and as well as com prehensive. If some if the things that have been mentioned cannot be included in the curriculum then they are given as additional training to the students (Deb, 2006). The needs for education or training was determined by conducting a full fledge study. It has been learned through previous experience is that if trainings are forced upon the nurses then they tend to feel like rebels and they do not pay full attention and it ends up as a waste of money and resources and time on the part of the nurses. The training and development department of the HR department of the hospital conducts annual searches word wide and as well as locally so as to gather information about any new trainings and courses that are trending and then they put it up on the notice boards, if the training is very necessary then every nurse has to attend it and then they are paid overtime for the hours that they spend in learning. Similarly some of the courses are put up and the interested nurses voluntary sign in t heir names. They are given credit through bonuses and special recognition rewards, this motivates them (Deb, 2006). The other method that is used is through the doctors. The doctors are inquired as to what they feel further that the nurses should be equipped with and then necessary trainings are identified and the nurses are trained. The main restraining factors in the case of further training or certificate courses

Cinema Is A Development Through Many Ages English Language Essay

Cinema Is A Development Through Many Ages English Language Essay Movie also is a great entertainment for peoples. Nowadays, many people love movies and going to the cinema for movie, especially the youngest generation. Cinema are attracted to people and they will be going to the cinema watching movie every week or twice a week for relaxing after day of work or study and this already become as a trend. Cinema is a nice place for entertainment, relax, enjoyable and fun for teenagers, forms a part of our leisure time because of today life has grown complex, full of worries and anxieties. Some of their life cannot without movie. Movie will teaching a lot for us that about life in the world. We are not only can learn and make our lives better and also learn reality in life from the movies. Movies also keep updated us and know the new information, famous and popular things, place or people around the world. A research shows (Levy, n.d) the vast majority (79 perecnt) of those questioned said, Going to the movies is a good escape from everyday life. A fil m can change people life become better or worse. There have 9 types of movies are shown in cinema such as horror movies, romantic movies, drama movies, suspense movies, action movies, violence movies, comedy movies and documentary movies. Despite the fact that, watching a movie not only can affects on moral values and cultures on people who are college students, scholar and childrens and also individual behavior. It can be influence in a numerous ways. The effects of movies are various, including weighing on elements of sex and race. Some of the peoples will influence their thinking, action and attitudes changes on some level by movies but movie has good influence for youth also. In fact, movie has beneficial and harmful effect of media on youth. According to appendix A, the questionnaire and survey shows 21 out of 30 are said that teenagers like to go cinema, others are neutral and disagree. In the other hand, 13 out of 30 are said that movie will influence the behavior and attitude of teenagers in general. Many of parents will control their children going to the cinema for movie or watching film in the house. The reasons of their parents control them because they worry their child influence bad attitude and moral influence from movie like smoking and fashionable such as hairstyle and wearing. Cinema would be easily influence teenagers attitude and thinking, they will change their mind. They would change their habits and try to imitate their favorite stars hairstyle, wearing and attitude. For example, some of the children they would learn smoking from the movie. Violence movie will influence teenagers whose mine are childish. They will try to imitate like ga ngster and doing bad things. Example damage people house and cars fight with others people, bullying and vandalism. Romantic movies also will affect youth thinking and behavior. After youth watch a romantic movie, the percentage of early married will increase because the end of the movie is the best. Many people agree watching movie on weekends but teenagers, scholar, student and college student who spend too much on watching movie will be addicted and tend have sedentary lifestyle. They will not only influence their cultural, lifestyle and homework and also physical influence. Physical influence means influence their health. They always stay at cinema or home watch movie and lack of doing exercise at outside to absorb a fresh air so that they will get fat and illness. Besides that, from the survey are said that 14 out of 30 said that the movie tickets are very expensive. It would be increase the expense of the parent. The survey are said that 16 out of 30 said that are disagree movies that are played more than 1 hour are wasting time. I am agreeing also because sometimes watching movie is not wasting time. That is giving us relax after working or study. Watching movie will keep updating us with the world what had happening and trend around the world. The questionnaire shows that movie will not affect relationship like family relationship, friends and couple relationship. I am agreeing movie is a best way to improve relationship when they are sitting together watch a film because they can share and communicate about their feeling, opinion or thinking from the movie, especially family relationship. Parents should spend one or two hours for movie to accompany their children. From that, parents can know well what their children thinking and doing. Furthermore, the questionnaire survey shows that 10 out of 30 are agree movies will help us to be more creative. 12 out of 30 are disagreeing with the movies help us to be more creative and 8 out of 30 are neutral. Movie is a mind-killer. It dulls you. In my opinion, watching movie will disturb youth mind while there are doing homework or finding a creative inspiration because most of the youth, even though is adult, they also will concentrate on movie more than their tasks. The survey of questionnaire shows that 13 out of 30 are agreeing movies will affect performance in education. Parents must be full of supervision because movies will affect youth examination result, affecting college students, scholar and children reading habit. However, movies can be a powerful teacher. Sometimes youth will learn harmony, cooperation, kindness though the movie. A recent article (Anon., 2003) states that high school programming promoting media have been shown too beneficial, they give students mo re understanding when learning. And also movies will help youth to improve their language. Conclusion and Recommendation: In the conclusion, my opinion, movie is harmful more than beneficial for youth. Movie has big power to affect youth thinking, attitude, behavior, habits, lifestyle, cultural and hobby, even though is an adult. In the cinema, violence movies shouldnt band but less than 18 years old should prohibition watching violence movie in cinema so that can reduce youth imitate to be a gangster, doing a vandalism and the world may be reduce scum because under 18 years old their mind are still young, they cant analysis what are right and wrong. For me, I am not agreeing every weekend going for movie that is not necessarily because tickets of the movies are expensive. It will increase parents burden. Sometimes parents should spend some times to accompany their children watching movie and control them do not spend too much time for movie although they are Study College or University because movie will influence their examination result. Watching movie is a great ways to improve relationship with fam ily and friends, not only couple. It can know well each others for the movie. However, movies will giving us relax and entertainment after working or study. In addition, movie will improve youth language and communicating skill with others. The Cayman Islands :: essays research papers

Part I - The Question   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When I was 18, my family took a trip to Cancun for Spring Break. I absolutely loved the beaches and palm trees, the white sand, hot sun and blue waves. Ever since then I have had a real passion for tropical islands. My favorite and perhaps the most beautiful Islands I’ve researched are the Cayman Islands. I’ve only seen pictures and heard stories but I’ve already decided that’s where I am getting married. I still however, don’t know anything about the islands. My love for these islands and my thirst for knowledge on the topic has driven me to do more research and find out the history behind the Cayman Islands. I want to know everything about them, so far the only thing I know is that there are three islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little cayman. I would like to know more. I am hoping to learn about the early development of the islands, the people, growth, tropical climate and environment. I am doing this purely for my own reference and curiosity. Part II - Research   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I began researching for this paper online because it was easy for me to use and a lot faster than looking up information in text books, and it’s a lot more accurate and up-to-date. Immediately I found about a hundred web sites worth printing. After scrolling through page after page, site after site I realized I had barely scratched the surface, so I decided to pick the ones with the most promising titles and print them all. Then I began the tedious task of sifting through all those papers until I found the best ones. I think I ended up with about six different sites, all on different things about the islands. One of the best ones was about the history of the Cayman Islands, I found this to be the most factual. Another good one mostly was about the Geography and Geology of the islands. The rest of them were mainly about visiting the islands, the discovery of the islands, touring the islands and comparing and contrasting the three islands.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  After this I went to the Jackson Community College Learning Center and read through books and Encyclopedias about Cayman Islands but I found most of these to have the same information as my web sites, but not as good. I found a few pictures and maps that were helpful in my own understanding of the islands, unfortunately they wouldn’t be much help with my paper.
